Budget and calculator

How much does a month in Bali cost?

Using this calculator, a Backpacker budget is roughly $700 to $1,000 a month, a Digital Nomad budget roughly $1,200 to $1,800, and a Luxury or Family budget roughly $2,500 to $4,500. The default setup (Backpacker tier in Canggu, a mix of warungs and cafes, a scooter and a SIM card) comes to about $988 a month.

Is Ubud cheaper than Canggu?

Usually, yes. The calculator applies a rent multiplier of 0.85 for Ubud and 1.3 for Canggu, so the same tier of accommodation costs noticeably less in Ubud. Food and transport costs are the same in the calculator for every area.

How is the rupiah amount calculated?

The calculator converts your dollar total to rupiah with a live USD to IDR exchange rate. If the live rate cannot be loaded, it falls back to an estimated rate of 1 USD = Rp 17,900 and says so at the top of the page.

What is not included in the monthly total?

Flights, travel insurance, taxes, one-off visa costs and shopping are not included. You can add monthly averages for a coworking pass, a SIM or eSIM, a tourist visa extension, the E33G remote worker visa, a gym pass and a yoga package.

How often are the numbers updated?

The estimates were last reviewed on October 25, 2026. Prices change with season, exchange rates and negotiation, so treat the results as planning ranges. See the methodology page for how the numbers are built.

FAQ

Bali areas

Which area of Bali is best for digital nomads?

Canggu, Seminyak and Pererenan are the best known for networking, cafes, coworking and fast Wi-Fi. Ubud suits deep focus, yoga and creative work, Uluwatu suits surfers and couples who like quiet cliffside living, and Sanur suits families and budget-conscious long-term stays.

What is the cheapest area to live in Bali?

In the calculator, Sanur and Denpasar have the lowest rent multiplier (0.75), followed by Ubud (0.85), Uluwatu (1.1) and Canggu (1.3). Sanur is also generally calmer, with lighter traffic.

Do I need a scooter in Bali?

In Canggu streets are scooter-first, and on the Bukit Peninsula around Uluwatu a scooter is almost essential because places are spread out. Sanur has a paved beachfront path that is good for walking and cycling. Ride-hailing apps such as Gojek and Grab are an alternative, and the calculator includes monthly estimates for each option.

Does Ubud have a beach?

No. Ubud is inland, cooler and greener than the coast. It is the best base for focus, creativity and wellness, and the beaches are a scooter or car ride away.
